would like to invite you to support the project of publishing a book about an extraordinary life of a Brazilian black woman. I have met Julia in April 1981 on a boat on the Lake Titicaca, Peru. She was running away from Brazil because of political and social reasons; having
“just one luggage, a small handbag in which I kept my two T-shirts,
two pairs of underwear and my tools.”
Being a refugee myself, we started to talk and we stayed friends until now. I have always urged Julia to put down her biography, and finally in 2007 she has fullfilled my wish.

„Julia Barbosa dos Santos“

Why this book?

It is the unique vitality that comes through: To manage this one life, relying on skills which cannot be learned in any school; vitality and joy to live yet another new life, wherever on this earth. This energy to survive and to make a day of it in all kinds of situations comes through in her straightforward, unpretentious language. On top, the authoress frequently quotes the proverbs or everyday wisdom she was told by her mother (Amazona Indian) and grandmother (Portuguese white woman). Originally the book is an oral history in Portuguese and Italian, written down in perfect Italian. The text was now translated into English.

Julia and her father

Once again: Why this book?
Brazil is more than an emerging market. It is a booming country, selfconscious, with a woman as a president and considered to be an example of a successfully striving society.
Brazil was elected to organize the World Soccer Championship in 2014,
and as the first South American country it will host the Olympic Games in 2016.
Julia's autobiography might introduce the Brazilian recent history and present time to the world wide public thanks to her exemplary life story as a grandchild of a daughter of a white Portuguese plant owner and a second generation slave from Angola; her mother was Indian from the Amazonas.
